Bhopal: The Congress Monday decided to boycott the four-day special assembly session beginning May 11 convened to discuss making Madhya Pradesh a golden state and, will instead hold demonstrations against the government outside the house.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Congress legislature party (CLP) held here, CLP deputy leader Rakesh Singh Chaturvedi said.
“Instead, the Congress would, during the proposed session, demonstrate before the assembly over the issues like power and potable water crisis, corruption and deteriorating law and order situation,” he said.
Chaturvedi accused the government of not following the stipulated procedures for convening of the special session.
Earlier, President Pratibha Patil’s planned address to the assembly May 11 – the first day of a special session – was cancelled last week citing “unavoidable circumstances”.
This followed a letter written to her by some Congress legislators and an Independent member urging her to cancel her visit, and alleging the special session has been convened to glorify the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government despite the fact that the state has suffered a lot during its rule.
Former state assembly secretary Vishwendra Mehta also wrote a letter to the president, urging her to cancel her visit, contending the special session was being convened in contravention of the rules.
