Ahmedabad: A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court Tuesday fixed Nov 15 for the next hearing on the plea of accused and suspended Gujarat police official N.K. Amin seeking to turn approver in the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh killing.
Amin, suspended deputy superintendent of police, moved the court Tuesday with a request that his plea be taken up only after his voice test, as approved by the special CBI court, is completed.
The court had approved the investigating agency’s request for the voice test of Amin as well as former Ahmedabad deputy commissioner of police Abhay Chudasama and suspended inspector N.V. Chauhan, both behind bars in connection with the case.
The CBI request was a sequel to a sting operation inside the jail on Chauhan by Amin. Chauhan allegedly revealed intricate details about Sohrabuddin’s killing by the policemen.
The Gujarat High Court last week dismissed an application filed by Amin’s co-accused, including former suspended IPS officer D.G. Vanzara, challenging the constitutional validity of the plea to turn approver.
Eight accused in the staged shootout case, including Vanzara and Dinesh M.N., objected to Amin’s plea and alleged that it would violate their fundamental rights.
The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has been accused of killing Sheikh in a staged shootout Nov 26, 2005, in Ahmedabad. His wife Kauserbi is suspected to have been killed at a farmhouse near the city two days later.
Over a dozen policemen have been arrested for the killings.
