New Delhi : International police network Interpol has passed a resolution pledging its support to combating environmental crime, officials said here Thursday.
“Wildlife crime will now become a priority area for Interpol apart from terrorism, corruption, trafficking. The resolution will go a long way in conserving global resources and ensuring pristine environment for future generations,” said Rina Mitra, additional director, Wildlife Crime Control Bureau.
The resolution was adopted at the 79th session of the Interpol General Assembly at Doha held Nov 8-11.
The resolution recommended formation of an ‘Environmental Crime Committee’, and urged member-nations and partner organisations to contribute either financially or by providing personnel.
India welcomed the decision, saying its species are highly vulnerable to poaching and illegal trans-border trade.
More than a thousand police officers and delegates from 188 countries attended the Assembly.
