Kuala Lumpur : The University of Malaya (UM), Malaysia’s oldest university, and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (NNSC, or national centre for scientific research) of France have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for joint research on bacteria.
Professor Mohamed Sofian Azirun, the dean of the Science Faculty, signed the MoU on behalf of UM while the CNRS was represented by French Ambassador to Malaysia Marc Barety. Also present to witness the signing of the MoU was UM Vice-Chancellor Professor
Ghauth Jasmon.
The CNRS is a government-funded research organisation under the administrative authority of France’s Ministry of Research.
The MoU will cover research collaboration between Dr Chan Kok Gan, a senior lecturer at UM’s Science Faculty, and CNRS research adviser Dr Yves Dessaux.
Earlier, Barety said the MoU constituted a perfect example of scientific co-operation between French and Malaysian scholars. “This joint research by Dr Chan and Dr Yves is a project that the French Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and the French Republic support completely,” he said.
“The research on the bacteria known as quorum sensus is important as it will produce new findings in medical science,” he added. He hoped the collaboration between UM and CNRS would be successful.
