Workshop on media and minorities to be held in Mumbai

Mumbai: With an aim to empower minority communities through media positively and effectively, Institute for Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution (IPSCR) and Minority Rights Group (MRG) are jointly organizing a 4-day workshop on “Media and Advocacy” beginning from Dec. 6 here in Mumbai.

“This workshop is significant since it acknowledges the need to engage with the media which is often called the fourth pillar of democracy. Unfortunately, the media is today encouraging stereotyping of the minorities by portraying them in a biased manner. This strengthens a certain prejudice vis-a-vis the minorities. To address this, the media needs to be oriented to mainstream the voices and concerns of the minorities and contribute to the cause of Human rights and Justice” said Neha Dabhade, Project Coordinator, IPSCR.

A number of people working on minority issues in different parts of South Asia will participate in the 4-day workshop where experts will guide them. Ten among participants from India will be selected for training to engage with the media and use the same for advocacy purposes for the empowerment of the minority communities.

Eligibility: Those below the age of 25 years, working with minority communities or on their issues and well versed in English will be selected for the training.
