New Delhi : England managed to beat Trinidad and Tobago 4-0 in a scrappy pool ‘B’ men’s hockey match of the 19th Commonwealth Games here Wednesday.
It was hardly the sort of start England were looking for, but seemed happy at picking up three points. The Caribbeans derived some consolation for restricting the scoring to just four goals. They had conceded seven goals to New Zealand Tuesday.
Two first-half goals by Simon Mantell (9th, 19th) put England in good heart and on resumption, they added two more to the tally through Ashley Jackson (39th) and Alistair Brogdon (58th).
“Most of the guys will be disappointed with the execution,” remarked England coach Jason Lee when asked about his team scoring only four goals while missing twice as many.
It was at best a scrappy encounter with a lot of physical challenges that led to start-stop proceedings.
The Trinidad and Tobago team played an improved game Wednesday and even threatened to score with fast breaks. However, the experienced England defence stood firm.
