Archery gold will popularise the sport, says Malhotra

New Delhi: The gold medal for Indian women in the recurve team archery competition at the Commonwealth Games Friday will popularise the “not so popular” bows-and-arrows sport, feels Archery Association of India president Vijay Kumar Malhotra.

“Archery is not so popular as sport in India, but we hope today’s (Friday) win brings more popularity to the sport,” Malhotra said.

“It’s our first gold and we are extremely proud. The girls really worked hard. They gave their 100 percent. It was a tremendous performance,” Malhotra told reporters here. He is a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and also the vice president of the Indian Olympic Association.

The Indian team, comprising Dola Banerjee, Bombayala Devi and Deepika Kumari, beat England in the final at the Yamuna Sports Complex and won the first archery gold in the Games.
