Top Merkel ally urges stop to Muslim immigration to Germany

Berlin, Oct 9, IRNA — A leading ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s center-right government coalition on Saturday called for halting Muslim immigration into Germany amid an unprecedented Islamophobic wave in the country.

Talking to the Munich-based weekly news magazine Focus, the head of the co-ruling Christian Social Union (CSU) Horst Seehofer urged the restriction of immigration for people whom he termed ‘alien culture groups.’

He alleged migrants from ‘other culture areas like Turkey and Arab countries’ had more problems to adapt themselves to Germany.

‘In any case, I come to the conclusion that we don’t need more immigration from other culture groups.’

Seehofer’s CSU has spearheaded an intense anti-Islam campaign in recent weeks,
especially after the latest statements by President Christian Wulff who said Islam was part of Germany.

CSU General Secretary Alexander Dobrindt said openly that the integration of Muslims should ‘not be allowed to set off the weakening and neglect of our own culture and value system.’

Germany’s conservative parties have instrumentalized mounting anti-Muslim
sentiments in the country to further their political goals.
