Curfew lifted from Valley, injured succumbs

Srinagar: After days of unrest, the situation in the Kashmir Valley was calm on Thursday with curfew being lifted from all parts and a break in strikes called by the Hurriyat group led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani in view of Eid-ul-Fitr.

The situation is peaceful throughout the Kashmir and curfew has been lifted from all parts, a police spokesman said.

With lifting the curfew coinciding with the Hurriyat’s decision not to call for strike, shopper’s flocked markets and business establishments reopened in Srinagar and all major towns of the Valley.

According to Agence India Press, traffic snarls were seen at many places as people came out to make purchases for Eid-ul-Fitr which will be celebrated either tomorrow or on Saturday, depending on the sighting of the new moon, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

Curfew was imposed in Srinagar city on Tuesday and in Anantnag and Bijbehara towns on Wednesday after violent protests broke out in these areas over the killing of four persons allegedly in police firing at Palhalan in Pattan area of Baramulla district, 30 kms from here, on Monday.

Several incidents of stone-pelting and arson were also reported from different parts of Srinagar and Budgam districts late last evening.

“Some miscreants torched a car at Ompora in Budgam district,” the spokesman said.

A 55-year-old civilian, identified as Ghulam Mohammed Guroo, was injured during a stone pelting incident at Bemina the victim was travelling along with his two brothers from Letpora to Malora Sumbal. The victim had received head injury and was shifted to SKIMS where he passed away today.

Meanwhile, last night some miscreants intercepted and set ablaze one Maruti Car bearing number 2746/DAC and driven by one Head constable of Jammu and Kashmir Police at Ompura, Budgam. The Head Constable managed to escape from the spot; however, his car was damaged, the spokesman told Agence India press.

Kashmir Valley has been rocked by violent protests after killing of a youth by a tear smoke shell at Rajouri Kadal area of the city on June 11. The fresh unrest has left 70 persons dead.
