Roads in the Taj city were largely deserted and most shopkeepers chose to down the shutters to rush home to watch the match on TV sets.

The attendance at the school was also thin on the first day of the new session.

A few restaurants on the Taj road and Sadar bazar put up projector screens to enable their patrons to watch the match.

At tea stalls and dhabas, groups of people were seen discussing each ball and wicket as they crowded around TV sets or transistor radios.

“The excitement, however, is not of the type we witnessed in the match against Pakistan,” said Sudhir Gupta, an insurance agent.

In the morning, special prayers were offered at the city’s temples, gurudwaras and mosques for India’s victory.
