New Delhi: The Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) organized a two days National Level Research Scholars’ Orientation Seminar on the theme ‘Contributions of Research to Socio-Economic-Political Development’ on April 1-2, 2011 at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
Dr. Abusaleh Shariff, Chief Economist, National Council for Applied Economic Research (NCAER) delivering the Keynote Address opined on the need of excellence and patience for a contributory research work. He further emphasized that currently the policies of the Government are designed in a centre to peripheral manner, which needs to be turned around by grass-root research.

The seminar was addressed by well known academicians and intellectuals including Dr. Khurshid Ahmad, Founding Chairman, Institute of Policy Studies, Islamabad, who presented his views on ‘Research with Social Concern’. He urged the students to understand the needs of the society in the changing scenario and relate it to the welfare pf fellow citizens. Dr. Mohd. Rafat, Professor, Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI), spoke on ‘Decolonising the Research Practices in India’. He discussed extensively the current research methodologies and the co-relation between research and societal development. He also presented views on the central theme of the seminar.
Dr. M.K.M. Zafar, Associate Professor, Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad presided over the symposium on ‘Need of Neo-Social Movements in India and role of Researchers’. He lamented the lethargic approach and inability of the majority research scholars who try to find the easy way. He encouraged the gathering to research new dimensions that are able to deliver a progressive thought in the society. Dr. Muzammil Qasmi, Asst. Professor, JMI delivered a presentation on ‘Critical evaluation of Government policy on Research’. During the presentation, he expressed concern over the deteriorating quality of research in academics.
Research Students’ Forum of India was launched on this occasion.
Mohd. Azharuddin, President, SIO delivered the Presidential Address at the concluding session of the seminar. He envisioned the need of the conducting the seminar and the formation of a national level forum. He emphasised that the contemporary research focuses majorly on micro research, whereas both micro as well as macro research is a necessity for socio-economic-political development.
A panel discussion on the topic ‘Research in Indian Society: How Far.. How Near..’ was held. Papers were presented on the topic ‘New Dimensions in Social Science Research’.
P.M. Salih, Secretary General, SIO delivered the welcome address and also conducted the election process of the Forum. At the end of the seminar, Research Students’ Forum of India was launched and Javed Zafar, JMI was elected as the National Convenor and Limsir Ali, JMI as the Secretary. Students from as various universities attended the seminar who elected their representatives to form the Representatives Body of the forum.
