Islamabad : An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi Friday sentenced to death a paramilitary trooper accused in the killing of an unarmed youth. Six others were sentenced to life in prison.
Sarfaraz Shah was shot dead by a Rangers trooper in June after he was accused of theft at a Karachi park. However, TV footage of the killing showed that the Rangers trooper shot him despite Shah being unarmed.
The defendants denied all charges.
The court Friday sentenced Rangers official Shahid Zafar to death, Geo News reported.
The Rangers personnel were arrested under the anti-terrorism law as well as murder charges under the Pakistan Penal Code.
The charges said the Rangers personnel first caused injuries to Shah and later denied him medical treatment. Shah succumbed to his injuries due to excessive bleeding and lack of medical care.
The prosecution had named 46 witnesses in the case.
Shah’s family Friday said they were satisfied with the court’s decision and thanked the Supreme Court chief justice for taking note of this case.
Shah’s mother, however, said there would be complete justice only when the death sentence was carried out.
