Patna: To protest against the state government apathy towards victims of Kosi flood-2008 which caused the death of hundreds of people and displacement of million others in five districts of Bihar — Araria, Purnia, Supaul, Saharsa and Madhepura– Kosi Vikas Sangharsh Samiti in collaboration with Kosi Nav Nirman Manch is going to take out caravan from Dec. 7 to Dec. 10.
The caravan will start from Birpur (Supaul) and covering several cities, it will conclude in Murliganj in Madhepura. The caravan aims to highlight the problems of the affected people of the national disaster which was result of breach of an embankment of Kosi River on 18th August 2008.
The Bihar government constituted one-man Justice Rajesh Walia Commission on 10th September 2008 to probe the cause of the breach in the eastern Kosi embankment in Kusaha in Nepal. The commission was asked to submit its report within six months. Three years on but the commission is yet to start its hearing leave alone submitting the report.
“The calamity drew attention of people from across the world and millions of rupees were donated for rehabilitation of the victims and central as well as state governments promised to rebuild the entire affected areas. Three years have passed but nothing noticeable has been done for the victims and they are living in dire condition” said Nayyaruzzaman, President of Kosi Vikas Sangharsh Samiti.
He wondered as to why the commission did not submit the report after three years of its formation.
“It is very unfortunate that the state government does not seem serious to solve the problems of the Kosi flood victims” he added.
He also said that the Kosi flood issue exposed the true faces of the political representatives of the affected areas who failed to raise this serious issue in Assembly and Parliament.
“The caravan will meet the victims to know their problems and issues and then we will put a charter of demands before the government. In case of non-response we will launch public movement for the cause” informed Mr. Nayyaruzzaman, who also heads Bihar chapter of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind.
