New Delhi : A number of criminal incidents, particularly against women, in Delhi notwithstanding, the capital was as safe as any other city in the country and the government was trying to make it even safer, Home Minister P. Chidambaram said Tuesday.
The home minister said the crime rate in New Delhi as per the globally followed yardstick has shown a decline in the last 10 years.
“Delhi is safe as other cities in India and the government is trying to make it safer,” he said.
Replying to a question related to increasing crime in the capital, Chidambaram said crime rate per lakh of population, a yardstick generally followed world-wide to compare crime, showed a decline in Delhi from 392.66 in 2001 to 281.34 in 2010.
“The data available with us shows that the crimes are not increasing in the city,” he said.
He said by improving policing, recruitment of more police personnel and better coordination with states bordering the capital would improve the situation further.
