“In terms of numbers, 588,000 people have been affected. Over 4,800 are in relief camps. There have been three deaths. We maintain 18 camps for the floods victims,” said Pradeep Kodippily, deputy director of the National Disaster Management Center.

Meteorologist Merril Mendis said that a low depression situation has developed in the atmosphere which can cause more rains.

“We expect the continuation of the rainy climate in the north and east provinces while sporadic rains can also be experienced in other parts of the island,” Mendis said.

In the central district of Badulla, the residents said no sunshine was experienced during the last 14 days.

The bad weather forced mud slips and landslide warnings with some of the roads covered in mist making it difficult for motorists, authorities said.
