New Delhi : A man accused of murder successfully evaded arrest for 36 years but was finally arrested here, police said Friday.
Yoginder Singh, 55, lived in Uttam Nagar and worked in a factory in Patel Nagar, west Delhi back in 1974. He was on bad terms with one of his colleagues, Surjit Singh, a resident of Baljeet Nagar in west Delhi.
“The duo on many occasions had altercations and allegedly Yoginder had murdered Surjit Nov 12, 1974, with a sharp-edged weapon and dumped the body in a well in Bindapur village, south Delhi,” a police official said.
Three eye witnesses had also testified against the accused before a court and it was established that Yoginder had committed the murder.
But, despite efforts from police, the accused remain untraced and was declared proclaimed offender by the court Oct 31, 1975.
However, a recent direction issued by the Delhi police chief to trace all absconding proclaimed offenders resulted in a fresh hunt for the accused during which police visited Uttam Nagar several times, where the incident took place.
According to police, the accused had sold his house and people residing in that area had no clue about his whereabouts.
“We got a clue that Yoginder used to work as a driver and had remained in southern India till 1988. He started visiting the capital only after that year,” the official added.
However, the breakthrough came when police received a tip off that the accused was working as a painter on daily wage basis with Prasar Bharti in Khel Gaon area of south Delhi.
“Police arrested the accused Thursday from Delhi Cantt railway station. During interrogation, the accused confessed to his crime,” the official added.
