Texas: “Woh jo shayeri ka sabab hua, who maamla bhi ajab hua/ Main ghazal sunaoon hoon iss liye ke zamana usko bhula nade,” participants of the literary gathering in Houston,Texas, USA, on 8th of January, won’t ever forget this mesmerizing ghazal which is a part of the eminent poet Dr. Kalim Ajiz’s masterpiece, “Woh jo shayeri ka sabab hua.” And how could they forget, when the poet, who is also known as the “Mir Taqi Mir of 20th century,” graced the literary gathering with his presence.
Sham-e-Kaleem Ajiz was organized in honor of Dr. Kalim Ajiz by the Aligarh Alumni Association of Texas, (AAAT). Mr. Ishrat Aziz, a retied IFS officer and former ambassador of Saudi Arabia, UAE, Brazil and Tunisia was the chief guest.

Dr. Nausha Asrar, president, AAAT, welcomed the audience and Mr. Ishrat Aziz expressed his joy and honor to be part of this great gathering of Urdu loving people living thousand miles away from the land where the language is spoken. Founding president of the association and national coordinator of the Mushaira Committee of The Federation of Aligarh Alumni Associations, Mr. Perwaiz Jafri mesmerized the audience with his anecdotes and introduction of Dr. Kaleem Ajiz.
Mr. Jafri reminded the audience about the scary condition of Ghazal in the peak of Progressive Movement in 60s-70s and how poets like Dr. Ajiz remained adamant in writing Ghazals and retained its glory when it was going through its toughest periods.

The climax of the evening was Dr. Kaleem Ajiz’s recitation of his famous Ghazals. After reciting famous verses from “Woh jo shayeri ka sabab hua,” Dr. Ajiz recited another famous lines of his,
“haqiiqatoN kaa jalaal deNge, sadaaqatoN kaa jamaal deNge tujhe bhi ham ai! Gham-e-zamanaa, Ghazal ke saaNche meN Dhaal deNge”

And then, “Dardmand E ishq haiN, gham se na ghabraayeNge hum Shaairy karte raheNge!! aur mar jaayeNge hum.”
Dr. Ajiz was at his best when he was requested to recite his ghazal, churi jin ke…. Kaleem Ajiz sahib agreed and recited it in tarannum, “chhuri jinke haathoN se khaanaa paRe hai/Ghazal bhi unhiiN ko sunaanaa paRe hai”
The evening was concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Ali Rizvi, vice-president of AAAT.
