Chidambaram arrives in Srinagar on two-day visit

Srinagar: Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram arrived here Monday afternoon on a two-day visit to the Kashmir Valley.

Senior Congress leader and state Education minister Peerzada Muhammad Sayeed, junior state minister for Home Nasir Aslam Wani, and senior officials of the civil and police administration received the home minister on his arrival in the Jammu and Kashmir summer capital.

Chidambaram is accompanied by a team of home ministry officials besides Vijay Kumar, director general of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Raman Srivastava, director general of the Border Security Force (BSF).

The home minister drove straight to Raj Bhavan in high security Chashmashahi area of Srinagar where he will hold talks with Governor N.N. Vohra.

The home minister will chair a high-level security meeting Monday, which will be attended by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, senior state and central government as well as security officials.

He will visit Anantnag district where he will review the security arrangements at Pahalgam hill station for the annual Amarnath Yatra beginning June 29.

Chidambaram is also visiting a forward post on the line of control (LOC) in north Kashmir’s Gurez area before returning to New Delhi Wednesday.

This is the union home minister’s first visit to the Valley this year.

He visited Doda district of the Jammu region for a security review in February this year.

Chidambaram also reviewed the security situation in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district in October last year.
