12,000 evacuated due to floods in US state

Washington : A swollen river in the US state of North Dakota has flooded nearly 4,000 homes and forced the evacuation of more than 12,000 people, officials said.

The overflowing Souris river has destroyed several thousand homes in the city of Minot. It also forced the evacuation Saturday of the small town of Sawyer, home to some 350 people.

A CBS television report said the river has risen more than one metre.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has promised aid to the flood victims.

The National Guard has also sent 900 troops to the area to help the affected people.
