“Make no mistake, we can and we will sustain our contribution. Our resolve is steadfast,” Defence Secretary Liam Fox told the Daily Express.

British military chiefs fear the operation in Libya – which has already cost 260 million pounds (around $414 million) – could not be sustained beyond September.

Fox also said British troops will stay on in Afghanistan even though US President Barack Obama announced the withdrawal of 33,000 American troops over the next two years.

An unrest spreading through the Arab world erupted in Libya in February, protesting the 40-year rule of Gaddafi, the UN Security Council authorised military action against Gaddafi’s forces. US and European troops have launched many air strikes in the country since March.
