BJP wins Purnea Assembly by-poll

Patna: Amidst uproar over the Forbesganj police firing, Bharatiya Janata Party has won Purnea Assembly seat with its candidate and widow of slain sitting party MLA, Kiran Devi getting 53732 votes. The result of the by-poll held on 25th June was announced today. Congress candidate finished at No 2 with 30067 votes.

BJP MLA Raj Kishore Kesri was murdered in January 2011 by a school teacher Poonam Pathak for allegedly physically torturing her for some years. Pathak was arrested and sent to jail while CBI is probing the case. Kesri’s wife Kiran Devi was fielded as an NDA candidate by the ruling JDU-BJP combine.
