The thieves were ignorant of the instrument’s value, the Daily Mail website reported.

The Antonio Stradivarius violin worth 1.2 million pounds was in a black case with a Peccatte bow, valued at 62,000 pounds, and another bow made by the School of Bazin, valued at over 5,000 pounds.

The thieves were tracked down after police and prison officers recognised one of them, a career criminal, from the CCTV images.

Insurers have offered a 15,000-pound reward for information on the violin that was purchased for 750,000 pounds a decade ago.
