The robbers looted passengers on the Pune-Patna Express late Thursday near Meja, around 20 km from the Allahabad railway station, and managed to escape after pulling up the train’s emergency chain near Manda railway station.

“We have registered a case against 10 unidentified men,” government railway police (GRP) inspector Devendra Mishra told reporters Friday in Allahabad, around 200 km from Lucknow.

“According to passengers, some of them had guns while others carried sharp-edged weapons,” he added.

“The robbers primarily targeted two general coaches of the train. Though we are yet to ascertain the exact amount of cash and other valuables looted, an initial enquiry indicate the loot was worth around Rs.2 lakh,” he added.

According to officials, the robbers assaulted several passengers, mostly those who refused to hand over their valuables. However, none of them received any serious injury during the incident.
