Washington : The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) deployed two nuclear experts to Japan as part of the US government’s response to the emergency being witnessed in that country in following the devastating earthquake and tsunami.
An NRC statement said two officials from the NRC “with expertise in boiling water nuclear reactors have deployed to Japan as part of a US International Agency for International Development (USAID) team.” It indicated that USAID is the federal government agency “primarily responsible for providing assistance to countries recovering from disaster.”
The Commission’s Chairman Gregory Jaczko said, “we have some of the most expert people in this field in the world working for the NRC and we stand ready to assist in any way possible.”
The NRC has stood up its Maryland-based headquarters Operations Center since the beginning of the emergency in Japan, and is operating on a 24-hour basis.
It is examining available information to analyze the earthquake and tsunami event and understand their implications both for Japan and the US.
According to reports, a partial meltdown is “likely under way” at the damaged nuclear reactor in Japan.
