UN chief urges Libya to end violence against civilians

Cairo : UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Monday urged Libyan authorities to immediately end violence against civilians, and asked the world to speak as one against the North African country.

Ban was speaking at a press conference along with Arab League chief Amr Moussa in Cairo, Xinhua reported.

The UN chief also urged Yemen to end violence against civilians and start economic, political and social dialogues, and called on all sides in Bahrain to maintain restraint and respect human rights.

Ban is scheduled to travel to Tunisia later.

The UN adopted a resolution to impose a no-fly zone over Libya. A coalition of American, British and French forces Sunday bombed by air and from the sea key targets in Libya in aid of rebels holding Benghazi, as the country’s long-time ruler, Muammar Gaddafi, vowed to stay on and promised “a long drawn war”.
