New Delhi: Sustained economic growth, improved internal security and expanding relations with foreign countries are the highlights of the performance report of the United Progressive Alliance- II government, released by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on its second anniversary Sunday.
Some of the major points mentioned in the “Report to the People 2010-11” are:
* Economy had unprecedented growth of 8.5 percent from 2004-05 to 2010-11.
* Economy rebounded with 8.6 percent growth in the past year.
* Impressive agrarian growth with 235 million tonnes of foodgrain output.
* Increased support price for farmers and investment in rural infrastructure.
* Significant reduction in the number of school drop-outs.
* National Rural Health Mission has helped strengthen health delivery systems.
* Highest power capacity addition in a single year.
* Unique identification project “Aadhaar” launched in September 2010.
* Several measures to tackle inflation, including a selective ban on exports and future trading in foodgrain.
*Direct Tax Code Bill and constitutional amendment bill for implementation of the Goods and Services Tax introduced in parliament.
* National Green Tribunal established. Will implement the national action plan on climate change.
* Indian sportspersons did us proud in the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games, winning a record number of medals despite “some problems with the organising of the Commonwealth Games”.
* Internal security situation shows improvement. Northeast witnessed a marked improvement, Jammu and Kashmir “slowly and steadily moving towards peace”.
* Left-wing extremism remains a major problem. UPA government always adopted a “nuanced approach”.
* For external security, continued efforts on modernisation of the armed forces and indigenous production of advanced weapon systems.
* Voting rights for non-resident Indians enacted.
* India ratified the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.
* India elected to the UN Security Council for a two-year term.
* India hosted 45 dignitaries including several heads of the state and governments.
* Commitment to South-South cooperation, including the Special Assistance for Africa Programme (SCAAP).
* India remains committed to bilateral dialogue with Pakistan.
