‘891 died of Japanese Encephalitis in India’

New Delhi : As many as 891 people, including 508 in Uttar Pradesh alone, died due to Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in India till Nov 17 this year, parliament was informed Friday.

The government had formed a group of ministers (GoM) on the issue, Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

Assam reported 250 deaths due to the viral disease that infects animals and humans.

JE is transmitted by mosquitoes and in humans causes inflammation of the membranes around the brain.

Among the other states that have reported the viral disease are West Bengal (40), Tamil Nadu (15), Haryana (7), Kerala (6) and Goa and Andra Pradesh (one each).
