Mumbai: An expelled Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) member has been detained for questioning in connection with the murder of senior journalist Jyotirmoy Dey and he is likely to be arrested, a top police official said here Monday.
“We had taken Joseph Paulson into custody a couple of days back and are interrogating him,” Joint Commissioner of Police Himanshu Roy told reporters.
“He is accused of providing logistical support to Dey’s shooters. He is being interrogated and we are likely to place him under arrest,” he added.
Paulson, who was expelled from NCP last January, allegedly supplied SIM cards to two of the nine accused arrested in the murder case.
Paulson and his wife Mary, who headed the southcentral Mumbai Mahila unit of the NCP, were expelled for allegedly hosting a party on Christmas eve in December 2009 to celebrate the acquittal and release of D.K. Rao, a mafia leader belonging to the Chhota Rajan gang.
Five policemen were also suspended for attending the party, where they were seen drinking, dancing, eating and making merry with other mafia leaders.
Dey, 56, Mumbai eveninger Mid Day’s editor for special investigations, was gunned down June 11 near his residence in Powai, north-east Mumbai.
After over three weeks of investigations, police finally managed to nab seven of the accused from Mumbai, Sholapur in Maharashtra, and Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu. Two other accused were arrested a week later.
