Darbhanga returning to normal after communal clashes

By TCN Staff Reporter,

Patna: The riot-hit Darbhanga is returning to normalcy thanks to the efforts of peace-loving people from both Muslim and Hindu communities. But the shadow of tension has not gone fully for the Muslims of Rahamganj mohalla in Darbhanga town where riots erupted after a trivial dispute in the evening of September 3.

Eight people allegedly involved in the attack on Muslims have been arrested while police are raiding to nab remaining five named accused. Meanwhile, Police are camping in affected area to ensure situation becomes peaceful and calm and members of Aman committee consisting of people from both the communities are also making all efforts to restore the peace and communal harmony in the locality.

The incident was not serious but some members of majority community took it as an opportunity to attack Muslims of the locality. According to reports, a goat belonging to a member of majority community entered a field owned by Mohammad Qamar Alam and started to eat the crop. When Mohammad Ehsan son of Mohammad Qamr Alam saw crop being ruined by goat, he threw a brick to make it flee from the field. It angered the owner of the goat and some other people and they beat Mohammad Ehsan. But their anger did not end here. A group of violent people chased Mohammad Ehsan with lathi and other weapons to his mohalla. When people objected, they started beating them and also they looted several shops. A dozen of people including a girl and a woman were injured who were rushed to Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

The situation might have turned worse if the Muslims had retaliated in the same way but it was non-reacting attitude showed by Muslims which helped the administration to control the situation. Instead of taking law and order in their hands, Muslims informed police about the incident.

After the incident, Mohammad Ehsan lodged a case in Laheriasarai police station in which 13 people were named. Of them, 8 have been arrested on 5th September. They are Chotu Kumar, Sunil Kumar Sahni, Rohit Sahni, Prikchan Sahni, Shambhu Sinha, Ram Diyal Sahni, Jitender Sahni are Mukesh Kumar Sahni.

Meanwhile, Mukesh Kumar Sahni also lodged a case against 3 unknown people of the Muslim community. After the accused from majority community were sent to jail some BJP leaders are pressurizing police to arrest some people from minority community also. But as police have witnessed that Muslims have not done any violent act in this case, they did not want to make situation worse by arresting innocent Muslims.
