Srinagar: In the wake of some Kashmiris being detained in other states for questioning over the Delhi High Court blast, the Jammu and Kashmir government Monday sent letters to many state police chiefs in the country urging them not to detain Kashmiris on suspicion without informing the authorities here.
Kuldeep Khoda, state director general of police (DGP), told IANS here in the evening: “We have written to DGPs of all those states where Kashmiris are working or are engaged in studies, especially in those states where Kashmiris have been picked up for questioning in the past, that they should immediately inform us about intended detentions.”
Khoda said this would help the Jammu and Kashmir police immediately prepare background notes on the people under suspicion which would in turn also help the police in those states where any Kashmiri comes under suspicion.
“Obviously this would help the locals from being unnecessarily detained and at the same time ensure their speedy release, thereby saving their families and the state government from embarrassment.”
The police chief also said: “We have clearly written to the DGPs of those states that unless you have specific evidence and information against a Kashmiri working in your state, we must immediately and without fail be informed about the intention to detain our locals.”
He said the letter written to the state police chiefs is not specific to their investigations into the Delhi blast only.
“It is of a general nature and covers all investigations being carried out by the police in the other states where our boys and girls are studying or where Kashmiris are engaged in earning their livelihood.”
Two locals belonging to south Kashmir Anantnag district were recently detained by Rajasthan police in Alwar district.
Background notes prepared on them by the local intelligence have confirmed that the credentials they gave to the Rajasthan police are genuine and they do not have any history of involvement in subversive acts of any kind.
Sources in the local police have said the two detained persons were being released by the police in Rajasthan within a day or so.
The Delhi High Court blast last Wednesday killed 13 people and left around 90 people injured.
