Kolkata : Two army personnel rescued four people from drowning in river Hooghly after they were caught in a high tide here Sunday. Soldiers of Inland Water Transport (IWT) Operating Unit of the Corps of Engineers were involved in the rescue act.
The rescued four – Prabiv Banerjee, 25, Ajay Bhowmick, 16, Debesh Mondal, 21 and Sourabh Dey, 21, had come to the banks of Ganga to have a bath and decided to swim across to the other side towards the Kali temple when they were suddenly swept away in the bore tide.
Following their shouting two soldiers jumped into the water and caught hold of the drowning boys, braving the rising water level.
All four were rescued with the help of the ropes and were brought to the anchored crafts at the mooring point.
