New Delhi : The power generation capacity added during the 11th Plan is about 260 percent of the total capacity added during the 10th Plan, Minister of State for Power K.C. Venugopal informed parliament Friday.
In a written reply, the minister said the power generation capacity added in the Eleventh Plan is 54,964 MW as against the total capacity addition of 56,618 MW in the 8th, 9th and 10th Plans taken together.
In the year 2011-12, capacity addition of 20,502 MW exceeded the target of 17,601 MW, which is the highest ever annual capacity addition and is nearly equal to capacity added in the 10th Plan.
The reasons for not achieving the capacity addition targets include delay in the placement of orders for main plant equipment, delay in supply of material for main plant, slow progress of civil works, contractual disputes between project developer and contractor, delay in land acquisition, shortage of manpower, law and order problems, and difficult climate conditions.
As per the report of the working group on power, capacity addition requirement during the 12th Plan is 75,785 MW.
The minister said that several measures have been initiated by the government to achieve the capacity addition target, which include augmentation of manufacturing capacity of equipment makers BHEL from 10,000 MW in 2007 to 20,000 MW by 2012 and formation of several new joint ventures to manufacture super-critical boilers and turbine-generators for thermal power plants.
