New Delhi : The central government Monday reviewed the security situation in Assam and took stock of relief and rehabilitation measures for those affected by the clashes between the Bodos and the Bengali speaking Muslims that have left at least 86 dead.
Union Home Secretary R.K. Singh reviewed the situation in the relief camps in Assam with state Director General of Police J.N. Chaudhary and Principal Home Secretary Shailesh here.
According to a home ministry statement, the number of relief camps have come down from 340 to 218 as on Aug 27 and the number of people living in the relief camps has also reduced to 2.3 lakh from 4.5 lakh since ethnic violence between Tribal Bodos and Bengali speaking Muslims broke out in the northeastern state July.
A central team had visited the riot affected areas of lower Assam including Kokrajhar, Dhubri and Chirang to review the condition of relief camps and the ongoing rehabilitation efforts Aug 21-23 and has submitted its report which has been reviewed by the home secretary.
Though home ministry officials claimed the number of people living in the relief camps has been coming down, sources said the number has remained at over two lakh for the past week as many of them are still apprehensive of their security and have not gone back to their homes.
During the meeting, health care measures, water supply and sanitation situation in addition to safety and security in the relief camps was also reviewed, said the release.
