Kabul : A man wearing a uniform of the Afghan National Army (ANA) shot dead three NATO soldiers in southern Afghanistan Wednesday, the coalition confirmed Thursday.
Wednesday’s attack is the latest in the so-called “green-on-blue” insider attacks when members of Afghan army, police or gunmen in their uniform turned their weapons against foreign partners, leaving casualties.
“An individual wearing an Afghan National Army uniform turned his weapon against International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service members in southern Afghanistan yesterday, killing three,” reported Xinhua, citing a statement from the NATO-led ISAF.
“The incident is currently under investigation,” the ISAF statement said, without disclosing the nationalities of the victims under its policy.
However, an Afghan military official in the south said the incident took place in southern Uruzgan province and the dead were Australian soldiers.
The casualties take to 45 the number of NATO and US soldiers killed in the 34 green-on-blue attacks since beginning this year.
The casualties also bring to 15 the number of foreign soldiers who have been killed in such incidents across Afghanistan so far this month.
