“The Situation of Assam: Views and Background” was organized by Bihar Sahyog Samaj at Gandhi Peace Foundation.

Editor of the Milli Gazette, Dr. Zafarul Islam Khan said that main reason for the Assam violence is the Bodo Accord. The Accord should be reviewed and Muslims given representation in the Council.

Even though the accord asked for disarming of the Bodo militants, but still they did not surrender all their arms which is a violation of the agreement.

Activist Mahtab Alam who has recently returned from a visit to Assam said the condition there is very critical and they can spiral out of control very easily. The same forces that are active in spreading communalism in the nation, are also active in Assam and using Bodos against Muslims for their nefarious designs. “Lack of trust is so deep that people are afraid to areas inhabited by other communities,” said Alam.

Maulana Aijaz Urfi Qasmi, president of All India Tanzeem Ulma-i-Haq in his speech said that the violence in Assam is a plan by Fascist forces to push Muslims out of those areas. He also asked for Muslim representation in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC).

Activist Mritunjay Kumar opined that the conflict in Assam is not between Hindus and Muslims, as is being portrayed. Not all Bodos are Hindus but they are being used by the anti-Muslim forces. He criticized media for ignoring Assam violence but creating panic by highlighting exodus of North Eastern residents from other parts of India.

Columnist Abid Anwar presided over the program. Bihar Sahyog Samaj plan to send a fact-finding delegation to Assam.
