The meeting was called for the election of mayor and deputy mayor – the posts were vacant after the resignation of former mayor Kartika Indra Reddy of Congress, and deputy mayor Jaffer Hussain Mehraj of AIMIM.

Majid Hussain’s name was proposed by MIM’s Doodhbowli corporator M.A. Ghaffar and former Mayor Banda Karthika Indra Reddy, while Congress floor leader K Venkatesh and MIM’s Mohammad Nazeeruddin proposed the candidature of Kavadiguda corporator G Raj Kumar for the post of Deputy Mayor.

Congress and AIMIM had fought GHMC elections as allies in 2009. After the alliance swept the polls they agreed on a poll act, according to which Congress will hold post of mayor for two years, and AIMIM for next two years and the final year will be decided by both parties mutually.

In the 216-member GHMC Congress has 93 members — 52 corporators and 41 ex-officio members, while AIMIM has 43 corporators and 10 ex officio members which make the total to 53 members. The Opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) boycotted the council meet, demanding secret ballot. Election was held in the corporation hall in the GHMC office at 11: am today. Collector of Hyderabad Mr. Natrajan Gulzar announced the voting results and election of Majid Hussain as mayor and Rajkumar as deputy mayor.

AIMIM ignored strong contenders like Mir Zulfiqar Ali, former mayor, and Jaffer Hussain Mehraj, former deputy mayor, and chose an MIM youth leader. It clearly indicates the party’s strategy to attract the Muslim youths in its fold in the growing opposition in its stronghold Hyderabad.

Posts of mayor and deputy mayor were vacant sine 3rd December after the resignation of both. The special meet was schedule to take place at 30 Dec but postponed to today’s date because of ongoing parliament session. City health Minister D Nagender and housing minister Mukesh Goud, Congress MPs Nandi Yellaiah and Anjan Kumar Yadav, MIM MLAs Ahmed Pasha Quadri, Mumtaz Ahmed Khan, Muqtada Afsar Khan, Mohammad Moazam Khan, Ahmed Balala and Virasat Rasool Khan were also present in the meeting.

Mohd Majid Hussain has been AIMIM Standing committee member, and Chairman of Ward committee, he will hold the post of mayor for two years.
