New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Wednesday issued notice to Haryana in the wake of a reported spurt in cases of baby girls being abandoned in the state.
“The NHRC has issued notice to the Haryana’s chief secretary, asking him to submit a report on allegations, as reported in the media, that incidents of abandoned infant girls have recently shot up in the state,” said a statement from NHRC.
“In April-May, in a span of 10 days four abandoned baby girls were admitted to the Post Graduate Institution of Medical Sciences, Rohtak, in critical condition. The commission has given four weeks time to the chief secretary to respond,” the statement added.
Taking suo motu cognisance of news reports forwarded by Jai Hind Anti-Corruption Society in this regard, the commission has directed the Haryana chief secretary to inform it about steps been taken to sensitise people of the state on the consequences of such a brutal act.
