New Delhi : The BJP Wednesday sought an answer from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the communal violence in Assam even as it blamed the state’s Congress government for the situation.

“We are directly questioning the prime minister as he represents Assam (in the Rajya Sabha). What did the Congress government in the state do,” Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy told reporters.

“Would the so-called secular Congress government say if they have an answer to this violence? As the violence spread in these districts, the police stations were shut down,” he said.

Kokrajhar and Chirang have become a cauldron of communal tension since July 19 with 35 people killed and thousands rendered homeless in the violence between the Bodos, who are tribals, and Bengali-speaking Muslims.

Rudy said the conflict erupted due to the changing demographics of the region following the arrival of Bangladeshi immigrants.

“We have been saying this. The situation came because of the changing demographics of the region. There is a similar situation in other states along the border,” Rudy said.
