Islamabad : Enraged over the ongoing power crisis, people in Pakistan’s Rawalpindi city have destroyed infrastructure and inflicted a loss of around Rs.8.5 million to the government.
At least 10 traffic signals imported from Australia two years back were broken by rioters earlier this week, Chaudhary Naseer Ahmed, director general of the Rawalpindi Development Authority, told Dawn News.
A single traffic signal was worth Rs.4,00,000, he said.
Protestors uprooted metallic grills installed on the medians of main roads and took the pieces with them.
Officials’ cars were also pelted with stones, damaging a number of them.
Trees and flower pots planted in the last three years in many parks were all uprooted and broken, the Parks and Horticulture Agency said.
An official said the agency suffered a financial loss of Rs.2.5 million due to the riots.
