Guwahati : One labourer was killed and three others were seriously injured when Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) troopers opened fire on a group of protesting labourers at a project site in Dibrugarh district Friday.
The incident took place when a group of CISF jawans deployed at the Brahmaputra Crackers and Polymer Limited (BCPL) site in Lepetkata beat up a labourer over a minor issue. The other labourers immediately protested and resorted to vandalism.
The CISF jawans opened fire on the crowd, killing one labourer and injuring three others.
Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police Arabinda Kalita confirmed the incident and said the injured labourers have been shifted to the Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh. “The situation is under control now and we are holding a meeting with the BCPL officials as well as CISF authority,” he said.
The BCPL is a mega project sponsored jointly by the GAIL, the Assam government, OIL and Numaligarh Refinery Limited. While GAIL holds 70 percent share in the project, the other shareholders have ten percent each.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone of the mega project on April 9, 2007. It is expected to start operation by September this year. Upon completion, the project is expected to produce 2.20 tonnes of ethylene annually.
