The accident took place as the bus, commissioned under the state government’s Gomant Bal Rath scheme, collided with a truck ferrying ore at the mining village of Usgao, 30 km from here.

The other two who died are the driver and conductor of the school bus.

“A total of three people are dead. These are the driver and cleaner of the bus and a 12-year-old girl,” a police spokesperson said. The truck was carrying iron ore from Curchorem, a small town in South Goa, which is surrounded by iron ore mines.

This is the second tragedy in Goa within a month involving school children. Four school children had earlier drowned after a bus sank in the Calvim river, near the ferry wharf at Aldona, 20 km north of here.
