Guwahati : The Assam government is going to start the process of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) from July 1.
The Group of Minister (GoM) represented by Assam Health and Revenue Minister Prithivi Majhi said this Saturday after meeting representatives of 26 groups representing various communities in Assam.
The updating of NRC is important to identify Bangladeshis who have sneaked into Assam, posing serious threat to the state’s demography.
The Assam government had earlier started a pilot project to update the NRC in Barpeta district in 2010.
But this was put on hold following the death of four men in police firing on supporters of the All Assam Minority Students Union in the district July 21, 2010.
Then the powerful All Assam Students Union and 25 other groups stepped up demands to start the process of updating the NRC.
