Kolkata : Jail inmates in West Bengal have scripted a success story, with over 100 of them passing the Madhyamik (Secondary) examination and outperforming general students in the process. Seven women are among the 108 inmates who cleared the exams.
“One hundred and eight of 111 inmates who appeared for the exam were successful registering a pass percentage of 97 percent. 45 inmates got in excess of 60 percent securing grade A,” Inspector General of West Bengal Correctional Homes Ranvir Kumar said.
The average pass percentage of all students across the state is 81.06 percent.
The number of candidates who appeared this year has also been more than previous year when only 64 of them sat for the exam.
“It is the coordinated efforts of the correctional homes, the voluntary organisation teaching the inmates and the board which has led to the increase in the number of (inmate) candidates passing the examination,” president of West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, Chaitali Dutta said.
The correctional homes as jails are called in the state, have made provision for a separate studying room for inmates, and teachers from several voluntary organisations held classes for the inmate examinees.
