Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said this here Thursday while participating in a seminar on the latest new technology for harnessing hydropower potential and ensuring dam safety.

He said that the to-be-formed committee will advise on its use in state projects.

“We are also going to start a pilot project on experimental basis using the Piano-key Weir technology,” said Gogoi.

The chief minister also pointed out that the northeast region as a whole has the potential of generating 45,000 MW of hydropower and that the states have however not been able to use the hydropower potential of the region due to various reasons.

Assam has also failed to utilise the hydropower potential of Brahmaputra river.

Gogoi said that Assam has been facing flood and erosion problems annually due to the 56 major rivers and about 26 of its tributaries. However, it is high time to utilise latest technologies to harness the hydropower potentials of these large river systems in Assam and use it for the development of the people and society.
