Kolkata : Villagers of West Bengal’s Nadia district, where a person was killed in police firing Nov 14, Monday sought a probe by the West Bengal Human Rights Commission into the incident.
Villagers from the Tehatta subdivision, led by civil rights organisation Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR), met commission Chairman Justice (retd.) Asok Kumar Ganguly, urging him for sending a fact-finding team to the area.
“Inquiries announced by the state government are routine inquiries and we have serious doubts whether they will serve any purpose. So, we have urged the commission to intervene and inquire into the matter,” said Ranajit Sur, secretariat member, APDR.
An eight-member APDR team visited the violence-affected area Nov 15 and a detailed report on the alleged atrocities against the villagers by police after the incident will be handed over to the commission Wednesday, he said.
“After we get the detailed report, we will take a call on initiating a probe,” said commission Joint Secretary Sujay Haldar.
A man was killed and nine people were injured in Tehatta, around 150 km from here, Nov 14 following a mob-police clash over a land dispute.
While the government ordered a magisterial inquiry, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee defended the action saying police fired in “self-defence”.
