Bangkok: US President Barack Obama, on his first post-election overseas tour, visited a world-famous Buddhist temple, and met Thai king Bhumibol Adulyadej and Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.
Obama arrived Sunday in Bangkok, the first stop of his first official foreign trip since being re-elected earlier this month, Xinhua reported.
The US president arrived at the Don Muang airport in the northern suburbs of Bangkok, and was whisked away by a top-security motorcade to Wat Phra Chetupon Vimangklaram temple at the heart of the Thai capital.
He was accompanied to the temple by US Ambassador Kristie Kenney.
Obama admired centuries-old mural paintings and a giant reclining Buddha statue at the temple.
An hour later, Obama met King Bhumibol. The meeting was also attended by the prime minister and the US ambassador.
Later, Obama held bilateral talks with Shinawatra and members of her cabinet.
A state dinner was held in honour of the visiting US president. After a one-night stay in Bangkok, Obama is scheduled to leave for Yangon where he will meet Myanmar President Thein Sein and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
As the final leg of his first overseas tour, Obama is scheduled to attend an East Asia summit in Cambodia.
