District and Sessions Judge B.P. Routray Monday held 28-year-old Pradip Dalai guilty but would pronounce the quantum of punishment Wednesday.

The accused was arrested by police Sep 3. He was found guilty of allegedly kidnapping, raping and murdering a seven-year-old girl at Sambalpur, about 317 km from here, said public prosecutor Artatran Mishra.

Police filed a charge sheet against Dalai within seven days of the crime.

The judge pronounced Dalai guilty on the basis of the depositions made by about a dozen of people, including the witnesses, doctors, and police officials, during the course of the trial.

“This is probably for the first time that justice has been delivered by a court so swiftly in our region,” Mishra told IANS.
