Mumbai : Over 300 women who were rescued from brothels in south Mumbai will be produced in court Saturday and their age verified. Over 100 men and 70 women have been arrested in the case, police said Friday.
“Police had raided a five-storey building in south Mumbai Thursday and rescued 333 victims of the sex trade. The raid had been carried out under the leadership of Additional Commissioner of Police Krishna Prakash till wee hours today (Friday),” Assistant Commissioner of Police Anant Jadhav told IANS.
“As many as 70 women, who are suspected to have acted as pimps, and 127 men, also suspected of having performed a similar role, have been arrested in the case and are being kept at the same building (Simplex Tower) under strict police vigil. They will all be produced in court Saturday,” he added.
Officials said that most girls rescued from the building spoke Bengali and were likely to be illegal Bangladeshi migrants, and many of them are likely to be minors.
“After being produced in court, the victims will be sent to hospitals so their age can be verified,” Jadhav said.
Policemen described the place as a network of cramped rooms. Several partitions were created and beds installed between the partitions. People in the neighbourhood had long been complaining that the building was a den of prostitution.
Earlier this week, Tuesday, a team led by Prakash had busted a massage parlour doubling as a prostitution den in Ballard Pier in south Mumbai. Three girls were rescued and four men were arrested in that connection.
