Gandhinagar (Gujarat)/Shimla : Gujarat will have a polling booth for a single voter to enable him cast his vote in the forthcoming state assembly election.
An official of the Election Commission said that a booth would be set up in a single-room building of the forest department at Banej in the Gir Forest to cater to a single voter.
Located 20 km from the nearest habitation, the village is called Sapnesh Biliyat, and it lies in the Una assembly constituency in Junagadh district.
The voter, Guru Bharat Das, aged 59, is a temple priest who will cast his vote in the first phase of polling on Dec 13, the official said.
Meanwhile, in Himachal Pradesh, the election commission has identified Shyam Saran Negi as the oldest voter in the country. The 95-year-old lives in Kalpa Tehsil of Kinnaur district. A retired government primary school teacher, Negi has in his family a wife, four sons and five daughters.
According to officials, Negi was among the first to cast his vote in independent India’s first elections October 1951. He cast his vote in the assembly polls from the Chini assembly constituency, which was later renamed as Kinnaur.
Interestingly, the world’s highest polling booth will also be located in Himachal Pradesh, at 15,000 feet above sea level.
This polling station will be set up at Hikkam in Lahaul and Spiti assembly constituency, on a motorable road. The Hikkam polling station will serve 333 voters, comprising 180 male and 153 female voters.
