New Delhi : Taking note of the nuisance caused by stray dogs in Lodhi Garden, the Delhi High Court Wednesday directed the civic agency to catch them and remove them from the area within two weeks.
A division bench of Chief Justice D. Murugesan and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw also asked the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to file an action-taken report on the issue, after taking a suo-moto cognizance of a media report on problems faced by visitors to the park.
“Catch hold of all those stray dogs. We have noticed that several stray dogs moving inside the garden. As lot of children come there, steps are required to remove the stray dogs,” said the court, while initiating a hearing on a report that said bandicoots had dug up burrows in the garden.
Lodhi Garden in south Delhi houses some historical monuments and is frequented by tourists and residents, including government officials and MPs, who live nearby.
The judges took note of the media report on the growing number of bandicoots who feast on the food left behind for birds by visitors. They also sought a report from the Delhi government.
The media report last week said that bandicoots had dug up burrows and left hundreds of holes in the ground which would cause cave-ins.
